Rail passengers travelling to and from Leeds station faced disruption amid incorrect reports that a man had been hit by a train.

Emergency services were called to Pontefract railway station at about 7am yesterday (Jan 12) after a man was seen near the line.

There were delays to services between Knottingley and Leeds, Wakefield Kirkgate and Pontefract Tanshelf as officials said someone had been struck.

But a spokeswoman for British Transport Police (BTP) said the initial reports turned out to be incorrect.

She added: “Colleagues from West Yorkshire Police attended the scene, and the man was detained under section 136 of the Mental Health Act and taken to hospital.”
