COUNCIL chiefs in Wakefield have commissioned an independent report on plans to close three swimming pools in the district and build a new multi-million pound leisure centre.

The local authority’s cabinet committee has voted to commission the report on proposals to close swimming pools in Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley.

It is proposed to replace them with a multi-million pound new leisure centre in Pontefract Park. Councillors also approved a recommendation for council officers to look into the possibility of outsourcing the management of Wakefield district’s leisure facilities. Coun Les Shaw, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, said: “We know that the leisure facilities in the Five Towns are in urgent need of repair. Building a brand new facility at Pontefract Park would help us deal with this and meet the needs of the people in this part of the district.”
