Hundreds of children at more than a dozen schools in the city are now registered for The NEWS Foundation’s Let’s Read: LEEDS project.

Participating schools include Greenhill Primary, Calverley Parkside Primary, Kippax Ash Tree Primary, Guiseley Primary, Shakespeare Primary and Asquith Primary.

And with the registration deadline of October 24 fast approaching, staff at other schools are being advised to get their skates on if they want to make sure of a place for their pupils on the scheme.

Each child in participating classes will receive a personal booklet filled with fun activities designed to develop literacy skills.

Pupils will also get their own copies of the YEP each week for six weeks plus a certificate of achievement at the end of the project.

The scheme follows the popularity of last year’s Reading Passport, another link-up between the YEP and The NEWS Foundation that was enjoyed by more than 2,000 local children.

Participants last year included Alwoodley Primary School and Kippax North Primary School.

Praising 2015’s project, Kippax North Primary’s Beverly Doubtfire said: “It really stimulated the children’s writing as well as their reading.”

Let’s Read: LEEDS, which costs just £2 per pupil, is being offered to all primary schools across the YEP circulation area.

However, places are strictly limited to the first 30 classes to register.

There is no limit on the number of classes that can sign up from a single school.
