Q&A: Discover the Leeds shop that is a tailors by day, gin lounge by night

Tailors is no ordinary store. The business, set up by Matthew Wignall earlier this year, offers bespoke, high quality suits by day. But by evening, it transforms into a gin lounge with a 1920s theme. Ricky Charlesworth finds out more.

HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE IDEA?

I’m a tailor myself and I’ve been working in the fashion industry all my life.

Me and my partner decided that it was about time to open a shop of our own.

As well as offering high quality suits we wanted to try and be a little bit different and incorporate a bar into the shop aswell.

We wanted somewhere where people can come and be relaxed.

The idea is that we want to tie it the tailors with a 1920s-themed gin bar.

WHAT IS THE VIBE OF THE BAR?

It’s a really jazzy bar.

A lot of the time when people go into bars, they go on their phones - we didn’t want that.

So tere’s a lot of interaction here between the guests.

There’s art on the walls and clothes for people to try on if they wish.

It’s a relatively small space but you can get about 60 people in there and it’s a great atmosphere.

WHAT HAS THE REACTION BEEN LIKE?

We only opened around eight weeks ago but it’s been really busy.

We’re appointment-only in the daytime but at night the gin lounge opens and we get a variety of people and groups coming in.

WHAT SORT OF GINS DO YOU SELL?

We’ve got 20 gins on the bar.

We met with a distiller and his team, and they’ve crafted some really good flavours that focus on quality.

We also stock a selection of craft ales as well.

Tailors is located in the Grand Arcade, Merrion Street. Visit tailorsgin.com.
