Pub landlord creates fairytale model made of chocolate

A pub landlord and self-taught chocolatier has revealed his latest confectionary creation as he continues an annual tradition.

Ashley McCarthy, who runs Ye Olde Sun Inn at Colton with his wife Kelly, designs a Belgian chocolate model with a Christmas theme to display in the pub each festive season.

This year the chef has taken inspiration from the classic fairytale Snow White and the Seven Dwarves to create a scene depicting the dwarves heading to the gem mine, complete with rubble train and shimmering stones.

The father-of-three spent more than 40 hours sculpting the intricate model, which is made from 10kg of chocolate, 1kg of icing and another 1kg of glucose.

This is the 12th year Ashley, who taught himself the skills needed to be a master chocolatier, has produced a themed chocolate model and the work of art will now go on show in the village pub, where customers can give donations to Martin House Children’s Hospice.

Ashley’s abilities have seen him add a dedicated chocolate room to the inn where he displays his award-winning range of luxury chocolate products throughout the year. He also takes commissions.

Martin House community fundraiser Alison Wragg thanked the McCarthys for their contribution to the charity.

“It’s hard to put into words the joy that Ashley’s chocolate delights bring to our children and young people. This year’s piece will be no exception; it’s truly exquisite!”

Ye Olde Sun Inn has won accolades including Yorkshire Pub of the Year, Freehouse of the Year and Licensee of the Year. Ashley’s gin-infused chocolate line has also been recognised with a Deliciously Yorkshire Taste Award.
