The police watchdog is investigating how West Yorkshire officers handled the case of a missing psychiatric patient who was later found dead.

Retired civil servant Brian Westerman, from Kirkstall, went missing from The Mount hospital in Hyde Park on August 14.

The 65-year-old’s body was found in the River Aire four days later.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission said it was looking at the force’s response to calls about Mr Westerman’s disappearance.

IPCC Commissioner Kathryn Stone will oversee the investigation. She said: “I have offered my deepest sympathies to members of Mr Westerman’s family and explained that we are investigating how West Yorkshire Police officers responded to the calls made.”
