'Praying' Leeds United fan remembers nerve-wracking day at Elland Road 28 years ago

We've tracked down the Leeds United fan pictured 'praying' on the Elland Road pitch during the 1990 promotion race.

It was the final home game of the season, and supporters waited desperately to hear that promotion rivals Newcastle United had been beaten.

Pictured in prayer was lifelong Leeds fan Alan Cheadle, who was 26 at the time and travelled to the match on a supporters' club coach from Mexborough in South Yorkshire.

"I was behind the South Stand net, and I remember Gordon Strachan scoring a wonder goal.

"The place was buzzing when the final whistle went. I had to go on the pitch to celebrate and we were told Newcastle were losing - which meant Leeds were the champions.

"I ran on with a few others in delight but I was told the game had not finished. I sank to my knees praying like mad, please God make Leeds United champions.

"I remember getting up and a photographer from the Evening Post said 'great shot, son'.

"I thought nothing about it and ran off to a friend's to celebrate. Newcastle had bagged a late winner, so in the end we won the league at Bournemouth."
