students from Leeds University have already raised more than £20,000 for the city’s Candlelighters charity – with even more likely to follow.

A team of 42 students from the university have notched up £21,752 for the charity which provides support to children with cancer and their families across Yorkshire.

Leeds RAG, the official fundraising society of Leeds University Union, has organised a trip to Prague with all the students making their way their by cycle. They set off earlier this week on the arduous 800-mile journey across mountains and the plains of Germany, camping every night along the way.

Jen Aspinall, Community Fundraiser at Candlelighters, said: “When Ellie Sanderson, one of the leaders of the Leeds RAG group, first contacted me she said they were all really excited to start fundraising.

“They have certainly done that and I have been amazed at how enthusiastic they have all been.

“The leaders arranged for me to talk to the group about the charity and they have visited us to learn about what Candlelighters do. I think this has motivated them to raise such an incredible amount, which will make a huge difference to children and their families across Yorkshire.

“Many of the team, who are studying at Leeds University, live all across the UK and everyone has got behind it.It really is fantastic to see.”

Before embarking on the Ellie Sanderson said: “I’m really looking forward to the cycle.

“I’m also really proud of how much the team has managed to raise for Candlelighters.

“We’re going to be able to make a big difference to a really special charity that has touched all of our hearts.”
