The power of 10! Stars celebrate milestone for Leeds fundraising run

Leeds United legend Eddie Gray, Leeds Rhinos favourite Barrie McDermott and Emmerdale actress Michelle Hardwick were among the familiar faces in City Square for the launch of the build-up to this year’s Asda Foundation Leeds 10K.

The annual YEP-backed run is taking place for the 10th time and the husband of Jane Tomlinson – the fundraising heroine who founded the event shortly before her death from cancer in 2007 – told of his pride at reaching the milestone. Mike Tomlinson said: “I feel very lucky to be helping to launch the 10th Leeds 10K.

“Jane would have been thrilled that after so long, the event continues to grow.

“On the 10th of July 2006, Jane was cycling across the Nevada desert to raise money to launch the first Leeds 10K.

“Ten years later, it seems that effort has been worthwhile.”

Emmerdale’s Michelle said: “I did my first 10K at the Leeds 10K last year and absolutely loved it.

“It was fantastic to see so many people turn out to support their charities and I hope the 10th anniversary year is even bigger and better!”

Rhinos hero Barrie said: “I’m not really built for running, but I always support Jane Tomlinson events.

“There’s nothing like the crowds and the atmosphere at the Leeds 10K.

“I’m looking forward to staggering up and down Kirkstall Road again this year – hope to see you there.”

As many as 10,000 people are expected to take part in the race, which is being held on Sunday, July 10.

It will be organised by Run For All, the company which looks after the various events that are now staged in Jane’s memory.

Julie Ward, from the Asda Foundation, Run For All’s 10K series supporter, said: “Congratulations to the Leeds 10K and the Run For All team on its 10th anniversary – what an achievement.

“The Leeds 10K has rightly earned a reputation as a must-do event and is one we are delighted to support.

“We look forward to seeing thousands of people, including many of our Asda colleagues, on the start line in 2016.”

The run’s official partner charities include Macmillan Cancer Support, Martin House Children’s Hospice, St George’s Crypt and Sue Ryder.

The event will also include the Clarion Leeds 10K Corporate Challenge, which will be contested by hundreds of staff from local businesses.
