His mother, Sue Miller, and his girlfriend, Jessy Howorth, collected a First Class Masters degree in Civil and Structural Engineering on his behalf.

Leeds University pro-vice chancellor Vivian Jones pad tribute to Mr Miller at the graduation ceremony.

She said: “He was hard working, bright and conscientious with everything to look forward to. His death is a terrible loss to the university, to the engineering profession, but above all to his family and friends who are here to receive his posthumous award.”

Mr Miller’s family said: “We are very proud and wish to thank Leeds University for their very considerate and thoughtful gift in conferring this degree posthumously to David.

“His loss is unendurable, these times are so hard for us, but this was a very special and emotional moment.”

The trial of two Burmese men accused of murdering Mr Miller and Ms Witheridge is underway in Thailand.
