A positive message in memory of Leeds shooting victim Raheem Wilks

A string of DJs and live performers will be appearing at the tribute event at Chapeltown’s Leeds West Indian Centre, with proceeds going to help with the cost of Mr Wilks’ funeral.

Members of the 19-year-old’s family are also due to attend to speak to people of all ages about the importance of the community coming together to prevent any further tragedies.

The evening has been organised by the Chapeltown Youth Development Centre. Its head, Lutel James, told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “The night is there to send a message that the violence has to stop.

“We also want to highlight the support that is needed in areas like Chapeltown to help kids who are hard to reach but easy to ignore.”

Mr James praised young players at Chapeltown Junior Football Club who have already raised £500 in support of the Wilks family.

Tomorrow’s event gets under way at 7pm and will feature two rooms of musical tributes and open speeches.

One room is for 12 to 17-year-olds and the other for adults, with entrance costing £5 and £10 respectively.

Mr Wilks, the older brother of Leeds United player Mallik Wilks, was shot in Harehills on January 26.

Two men from Chapeltown have been charged with his murder.
