There were 4,200 votes cast as of 2pm on Thursday and the results were as follows:

Lynsey Thomas said: "I'd still vote remain. I've seen nothing in the past three and a bit years to convince me that leaving is a good idea."

Tam Sinstentiford added: "Remain. Absolutely no logical reasoning or benefits to back leaving."

While Ben Warren said: "How about rejoining in 2030?"

Despite the overall result, most of the commenters on the YEP's Facebook page were still in favour of leaving.

Tom Clarke said: "As before. Out. and will be celebrating on Friday, then sit back and watch the whole rotten edifice of the EU collapse within eighteen months."

Lynda Slade simply said: "I voted out, and I haven't changed my mind."

There's not doubt the Brexit referendum has been the most divisive political decision made in a generation.

Some will be commiserating on Friday, while others will be popping the champagne - but many more will just be glad to see a concrete decision being made.

Gordon Roy said: "I voted Remain, but I believe in a democratic vote. So I'm glad that we are leaving. Otherwise why vote on anything in this country ever again."
