University of Leeds tells students they can cancel accommodation contracts for next term

It follows previous advice from the university suggesting those wishing to leave their accommodation, but not leave their course of study, would still be liable to pay rent.

However, the institution has now confirmed students can be released from their accommodation contracts for next term, which had been set to run from April-June.

The move will come as a relief to many students who have either moved home or seen their incomes dry up due to the economic impact of coronavirus.

At the time of writing, the University of Leeds website’s coronavirus FAQs section includes the question: “I am thinking about leaving my accommodation now, can I cancel/withdraw from my accommodation contract?”

The answer states: “If you are not planning to withdraw from your course and leave the University then your contract will continue (and you will remain liable to pay rent).”

However, the university has today said its FAQs will be updated ‘very soon’ and that it was writing to students today to make clear they can be released from their contracts for next term.

According to the Leeds University’s website, halls of residence accommodation costs range from £91-£211 per week.

The move follows similar decisions from Ulster and Queen’s University Belfast.
