Transport chiefs want to build segregated cycleways at Dewsbury Road, Clay Pit Lane and Elland Road, with work expected to start early next year.

A report from Leeds City Council officers claims the scheme, set up by regional super-council West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), will help connect up its existing network.

Proposals in Clay Pit Lane include a segregated cycle track between the junctions of Sheepscar and Woodhouse Lane.

The Dewsbury Road proposals include extra cycle tracks on two stretches of road: one between the junctions with Garnet Road and Beeston Ring Road; and another between Hunslet Hall Road and junction 3 of the M621. These would link existing cycle tracks already in place.

The Elland Road leg of the project will involve a two-way segregated lane between Elland Road park and ride and Leeds Bridge.

A report by Leeds City Council officers claimed: “The schemes essentially form key missing links in the infrastructure not covered by other funding streams and where no suitable alternatives are available. By helping form a complete and coherent network they have every potential to maximise benefits and usage.”

The £6.14m of funding for the scheme is set to come from WYCA – a regional arm of government responsible for large transport and infrastructure projects.

Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2020 and be completed by the spring of 2021.

The report will be discussed by Leeds City Council’s executive board on Monday, November 25.
