Tower Works, off Globe Road, which includes features of Italian classical architecture unique in Leeds, was partially redeveloped in 2011, but the rest of the site has sat empty for more than 40 years.

But now developers want to build a complex of 245 homes over two buildings of between nine and 11 storeys, as well as commercial uses on the ground floor.

A report which went before Leeds City Councillors advises members of the panel to agree the plans in principle, and to delegate other details about the development to Leeds City Council officers.

According to the proposals, the plans would consist mainly of two residential buildings on the western half of the site. An “r”-shaped building would be constructed to the north, while a second building would be build next to Verona Tower.

The buildings would rise to nine and 11 storeys in highs, while it is claimed they will be sympathetic to the nearby Italian architecture.

A report by Leeds City Council officers states: “The proposed building architecture is informed by the industrial vernacular of the area and Italian classicism. The buildings would be constructed in traditional brickwork, with red brick tones chosen to provide a subtle contrast to that of the towers.”

It added the site would be characterised by three public spaces on site around each of the listed towers: Giotto Piazza, Verona Square and Chimney Place.

Leeds City Council’s city plans panel is set to meet to discuss the plans on Thursday, February 20.
