Coun Judith Chapman has invited daredevils to take part in a fire walk in Millenium Square to raise cash for her chosen charity of the year, Specialist Autism Services.

It is the second consecutive year such an event – which sees participants brave a 15ft stretch of burning wood embers at temperatures of up to 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit – has been held for the mayor’s charity.

The fundraiser is one of many activities being held across the city on April 1 as part of the mayor’s Just One Day appeal, to coincide with World Autism Awareness Day. It is backed by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Coun Chapman said: “The Lord Mayor’s fire walking extravaganza proved to be very popular on its debut last year, and we are looking forward to this year’s event as part of our ‘Just One Day’ appeal, which will see all of the sponsorship money raised given to my chosen charity this year.

“Signing up to take part in the fire walk really could not be easier, and as always we are looking for as many people as possible who enjoy a challenge to take part and have fun.

“The support from the people of Leeds to my charity appeal has been fantastic and I am sure we will see another great turnout on what will be a memorable night not only for those taking part but also spectators.”

Firewalking is practised by many religious sects, such as Japanese Taoists and Buddhists, Eastern Orthodox Christians and Hindu Indians.
