Dozens of ex-Leeds council homes sold off under Right To Buy being bought back

up to 100 ex council homes which were previously sold off under the Right To Buy scheme may now be bought back by the local authority as it bids to plug housing shortages.

The homes will go back into the council’s housing stock and be rented out to people on the waiting list.

The buyback applies to ex council houses empty for more than six months. A new council report reveals owners could be offered an average of £90,000 to sell it back to the local authority. The project - which has already seen a number of houses sold - is part of a wider scheme to bring empty homes back into use.

Government figures showed 10,724 homes were empty in Leeds last year, with 2,915 empty long-term. However the council’s’ own figures said the number was 5,491.

Speaking of the wider issue, Coun Debra Coupar, executive member for communities, previously said: “Our focus will remain those properties that lie empty for more than six months and that cause a blight on communities. With continued investment, we can turn around empty properties to provide much needed homes.”
