Refuse teams have been working "tirelessly" over the weekend and today (Monday) to undertake recovery collections after residents missed their bin collections last Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Leeds City Council says its refuse team has made positive progress in collecting the high number of bins that couldn't be emptied last week, and it hopes to have caught up with collections by Wednesday.

Residents whose bins have not already been collected are being asked to keep their bins out until Wednesday but if they have still not been collected by then, residents should take their bin in until the next usual collection day.

Anyone who missed their booking slot last week at a Household Waste Recycling Centre should rebook a visit now that all centres in the city are fully open.

Leeds City Council apologised for any inconvenience caused.

It said in a statement: "Leeds City Council’s refuse team has made positive progress in collecting the high number of bins that could not be emptied last week due to heavy snowfall and subsequent icy conditions on roads, streets and footpaths. It is estimated that over 100,000 bins were missed.

"Teams were operating over the weekend to undertake recovery collections, with further work continuing today. Any residents whose bin was missed last Thursday, Friday or Saturday, are asked to please leave it out if not collected already, and we will do our very best to come back and empty it by Wednesday of this week. If your bin is not collected by Wednesday, please take it in and present it on the day of your usual collection day. We apologise for any inconvenience during this time.

"All Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs) in the city are now fully open and operating as usual within their Covid site safety rules (including the requirement to pre-book a visit). Anyone who missed their booking slot last week at a HWRC due to the bad weather will need to rebook a visit.

"We would like to thank the people of Leeds for their patience and also tremendous support to our refuse teams who have worked tirelessly over the weekend in testing conditions.

"Please keep any eye on the council’s social media channels for further updates regarding bin collections."
