Council to consult on plan for East Leeds Orbital road

The creation of a new East Leeds Orbital Road (ELOR) will connect the city’s outer ring road at Red Hall to junction 46 of the M1 at Thorpe Park.

It is part of a vision for the East Leeds Extension (ELE) - which will see hundreds of acres of undeveloped land brought forward for the development of around 5,000 new homes, community facilities, new schools and local retail outlets.

A new report, to be published by the council, says hundreds of residents have had their say as part of a major consultation on plans for the expansion of East Leeds and the orbital road.

Consultation materials and an online survey were shared on the internet and an ELE website received more than 2,500 unique visits. More than 250 written responses were received in total.

The authority said the next stage will include more consultation over a detailed planning application for the ELOR, later in the summer.

Councillor Richard Lewis, the authority’s executive member for regeneration, transport, and planning, said: “These infrastructure improvements will be integral to the growth of east Leeds. By working closely with landowners, developers, residents and public organisations, such as the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, government departments and other agencies we now have a report reflecting a wide range of opinion and expertise.

“I am keen that people examine and consider the updated proposals as we move into the next stage of planning.” The council said the houses built in the ELE will play a major role in its strategy to create 70,000 new homes across the city by 2028.
