£250k of Leeds rents written off

Leeds City Council is writing off almost £250,000 of irrecoverable rents it is owed by former council housing tenants.

The money relates to 490 accounts and is part of £220m the authority should have collected in the 2014/15 financial year.

A new council report approving the cancellation of the amount says the total former tenant debt is approximately £2.71 million.

It adds “bad debt provision” of around £3.5m is provided for former and current arrears.

The latest round of write-offs is the third so far in 2015/16, bringing the total for the year to £638,868.75 for 1,334 accounts.

The total written off in 2014/15 was £985,161.38, relating to 2,040 separate accounts.
