Police negotiators prevented a potential tragedy after the A64(M) inner ring road in Leeds was closed this evening amid concern for the safety of a woman on a bridge.

The dual carriageway was shut in both directions between Vicar Lane and Marsh Lane after reports of a woman threatening to jump from the North Street flyover at about 6.10pm on Tuesday.

Police blocked off the slip road onto the inner ring road – which is routinely closed at 7pm each night for road works – and numerous emergency services vehicles were on the scene.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said the woman was safely talked down at about 7.45pm and traffic returned to normal.
