Leeds City Council’s City Plans Panel will today (Dec 14) consider the proposals for Symons House in Belgrave Street.

The plans, lodged by London and Scottish Student Housing, include a 23-storey student accommodation building at the site.

Symons House is a vacant office building, to be demolished as part of the application, to the east of Wade Lane.

A report prepared ahead of the meeting said the scheme was first presented to the plans panel at pre-application stage in October.

The proposals have since been revised in response to comments made by members of the panel. If approved, the developers hope to start building work early next year and open its site for students starting in Leeds in autumn 2019.

The report, prepared by council officers, recommends the application for approval subject to conditions.

The report said: “The development of this sustainably-located site for use as student accommodation is acceptable in principle.

“By virtue of the combination of the facilities within the student bedrooms and the additional facilities provided within and around the building the living conditions provided for the occupiers would, on balance, be acceptable.”
