Photos released of six-inch 'bulge' on Stanningley bypass after road surface buckles in the heatwave

The road is undergoing repairs after the surface rose by around six inches last night once temperatures began to cool.

The city-bound carriageways were closed at 9.30am today to allow work to begin, and they are due to re-open by 3.30pm. Outbound access is not affected.

The reason why the stretch was affected more than other roads in Leeds is because of its construction. The concrete panels are more susceptible to expansion when exposed to very high temperatures.

The council is currently reviewing long-term solutions to the issue.
