She has called on business secretary Sajid David to intervene to prevent the franchising out of the branch on Providence Street.

The Post Office announced plans to close or franchise 42 branches across the country, including Wakefield, last month. More than forty people have signed a petition on Ms Creagh’s website to keep the current post office open.

Ms Creagh said: “The city’s crown post office provides an important public service and is a key part of our community. Local families and businesses rely on a full post office service and long-serving staff are seeing their jobs put at risk.” A spokeswoman for the Post Office said a six-week public consultation would be held before a final decision was made. She said: “We are seeking a suitable potential retail partner because we believe that franchising, which has been used successfully in other areas for many years, will secure services in the area for the future.” To sign the petition, visit www.marycreagh.com /save_wakefield_crown_post_office.
