Yorkshire Evening Post shortlisted for prestigious press awards

The Yorkshire Evening Post and its journalists and photographers have been shortlisted in a succession of categories for major awards.

The newspaper is in the running for daily newspaper of the year at the Regional Press Awards, which are run by the Society of Editors.

Three photographers – Bruce Rollinson, James Hardisty and Simon Hulme – are shortlisted for photographer of the year.

Their stunning images have captured life in our city including a striking photograph taken during the Leeds West Indian Carnival last year.

And the YEP is also in the running for front page of the year for its headline debunking fake news last year after the newspaper and its journalists were at the centre of an unprecedented onslaught of abuse.

Our hard-hitting front page “Don’t Be Fooled By Fake News” was prompted after we published a story about a four-year-old boy forced to sleep on the floor at Leeds General Infirmary due to a shortage of beds.

“We saw ourselves thrust into the national spotlight for our reporting and we were determined to show that trusted journalism matters now more than ever before.

“It is a real privilege for my dedicated team to be at the heart of life in Leeds and truly champion our great city.”

This year’s awards ceremony, due to be held last week, was cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

Society of Editors executive director, Ian Murray said: “The annual Regional Press Awards is the occasion in the calendar when the regional and local press can shout about the excellence that runs through the industry.

“It is a great pity that the awards gala lunch had to be cancelled, but we were determined the hard work by so many talented journalists in the regional press should not go unrecognised.”

The winners of the awards are due to be announced next Friday.
