Leeds tennis courts open for free play on British Tennis Weekend

Alwoodley is taking part in the LTA’s Great British Tennis Weekend event by holding an open day for all ages this Sunday (July 17) from 10am-4pm.

The club’s three hard courts can be used for free and new and ‘rusty’ players have the chance to take part in coaching, hitting and fitness sessions.

Qualified coach Danny Jones will be overseeing a family session from 10-11am for adults and children who just want to play together, before taking a Rusty Rackets lesson from 11am-12pm, aimed at players of all ages who are returning to tennis after a break.

Junior and mini tennis for under 16s is available from 12-1pm, with tips, games and advice on how to get involved in regular tennis. Children under 10 can play with small rackets, balls and nets.

Later in the afternoon players will be given the opportunity to use the club’s ball machine and there is also an adult coaching clinic for beginners from 2-3pm before the day ends with a Cardio Tennis on-court fitness class from 3-4pm.

Equipment is provided during the day and members will be on hand with information about joining Alwoodley, which was named the LTA’s Club of the Year for Yorkshire in 2014.

“We are a family community club in the heart of Alwoodley, and we welcome new members of all ages and abilities, and are keen to attract lots of new potential members to the club at our open day. This will be a fun day out with lots of different activities going on,” said junior tennis co-ordinator Carolyn Holroyde.

All sessions can be pre-booked at www.clubspark.lta.org.uk/alwoodleytennisclub or players can turn up on the day. The courts are located behind Alwoodley Community Centre, The Avenue, and parking is available.

Other tennis courts in Leeds will also be open for free this weekend for structured adult and junior taster sessions, including the John Charles Centre for Sport (Saturday from 1-3pm), Dartmouth Park in Morley (Saturday from 2-4pm) and the David Lloyd Club (both days, 2-5pm).
