Leeds schools hold Christmas funfair for children - but only for those with full term attendance

Schools in Leeds that are part of the same academy trust are holding end of year Christmas funfairs for students, but they can only go to the fair if they have attended school every day during the Autumn term.

The Gorse Academies Trust is holding funfairs at several of its secondary academies as a way of rewarding students for work and attendance.

In particular, the Ruth Gorse Academy on Black Bull Street in Leeds held its fair on Thursday as a reward for part of its 100 per cent attendance club which only grants access to events for students who have not missed school.

Ben Mallinson, Principal at The Ruth Gorse Academy said: “At The Ruth Gorse Academy, we continually look at ways in which to praise our students; this includes rewarding students for their attendance.

“Under exceptionally difficult circumstances, a significant majority of our students have attended school every day during the Autumn Term and we believe it is only right that this is celebrated with an event.

“Following social distancing rules and staying within year group bubbles, we are holding a Winter Wonderland themed event for our students with 100% attendance, in which they are able to enjoy fairground rides, stalls and games.”

The Farnley Academy’s event will take place today (Friday) at the school on Chapel Lane in Leeds.

The Gorse Academies Trust recognises that in some cases, absence from school is unavoidable and examples of this include marking a religious observance; to attend a specialist medical appointment for a lifelong medical condition; to grieve for and attend a funeral of an immediate family member; to self-isolate in accordance with Covid government guidance.

The Principal of each academy must authorise an exception if a parent or carer requires this.

The 100 per cent attendance requirement applies from November 2 to December 17 and ‘club’ members are issued with an attendance badge which must be worn.
