Leeds grandmother gets into VE Day spirit with Union Jack outfit

Margaret Horner, 72, from Morley, had her grandchildren in hysterics when she appeared on her doorstep in a special patriotic ensemble.

The grandmother-of-four was sporting a Union Jack raincoat, Union Jack sunglasses and topped it off by waving two Union Jack flags.

Her daughter-in-law Tracy, 42, said: "We just popped round to say hello and she opened the door wearing head-to-toe Union Jack.

"It was hilarious and she looked amazing. My eldest daughter, Teeya, 12, had to run back and take a photo to show her friends. She loved it.

"Margaret was the first person to teach Teeya about VE Day and what it means so it's really special to both of them.

"Her sister lives in London so I think she picked up the outfit when she was visiting for the Royal Wedding.

"I know she bought some of the glasses for the kids when she was down there - and for herself it turns out."

Margaret has decorated the Deansway home she shared with late husband Colin as well.

Flags have been placed in every window and used as decorations in her garden.

Since she put them up on Thursday morning, her neighbours have followed suit.

Tracy, a carer for youngest daughter Ebonnie, 8, said Margaret has always been the first person on the street to try and lift people's spirits.

She said: "Margaret always likes to get into the spirit of things.

"She's been celebrating VE Day all her life and she really goes to town every year.

"It's really important to her as her father fought in the war.

"She was the first one to put her flags out this year but since we visited her more and more people on the street have decorated.

"She just loves to make people happy and lift people's spirits.

"She's the first one out on a Thursday clapping for our carers with her frying pan and spoon.

Tracy, who lives just around the corner from Margaret, added: "The last few years have been a bit bumpy as Margaret has been poorly with Parkinson's Disease.

"But she just doesn't let anything stop her. It's fantastic that she's feeling well enough to do all of this.

"I know she thinks it is important that we keep spirits up and also teach the younger children about why VE Day is so important.

"Her efforts this year are fantastic but she's always been the same - wanting to make people smile.

"She may not be able to join in any VE Day street parties this year but we'll be dropping her off some fish and chips as a little celebration."
