Kim Kardashian: why is reality star 'getting divorced' from Kanye West and how many children do they have?

A-list couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are preparing to divorce, according to reports by US media.

The reality star has reportedly hired top lawyer Laura Wasser as “settlement talks” begin, but the pair are yet to publicly address the news.

It comes as TikTok users came up with a theory that Kim was “secretly” dating news commentator Van Jones - but this has since been debunked.

So, why might the Keeping Up With The Kardashians star and the rapper be ‘getting divorced’, how many years have they been married, and how many kids do they have together?

Why are Kim and Kanye ‘getting divorced’?

According to reports by US media, Kim Kardashian, 40, is “done” with Kanye West and the pair are heading for divorce.

While the couple are said to be keeping things private for now, sources told Page Six that separation “is imminent”.

Kim is reported to have stopped wearing her wedding ring, while Kanye is said to be staying at his ranch in Wyoming, worth $14 million, and the rapper has “no plans” to reconcile with Kim, who lives in LA.

Kim is rumoured to have hired Laura Wasser - a top divorce lawyer for celebrities - to produce a divorce settlement.

One source said to Page Six: “They are keeping it low-key but they are done. Kim has hired Laura Wasser and they are in settlement talks.”

The source added that the pair have been living “separate lives” for a while.

They said: “Kim got Kanye to go up there [Wyoming] so they could live separate lives and quietly get things sorted out to separate and divorce. She’s done.”

Kim has been a vocal and public supporter of Kanye throughout their marriage, especially since the rapper was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2016.

However, the source said to Page Six that her support is now wavering, especially as Kim prepares to become a lawyer and becomes more involved with prison reform.

They added: "Now this divorce is happening because Kim has grown up a lot.

“She is serious about taking the bar exam and becoming a lawyer, she is serious about her prison reform campaign.

"Meanwhile Kanye is talking about running for president… she’s just had enough of it.”

The couple’s problems are rumoured to have been exacerbated by Kanye’s 2020 run for US President.

Kanye announced his presidential bid in July, via a tweet, and ran alongside incoming president Joe Biden and incumbent president Donald Trump.

Yet, despite spending $14.4 million on his campaign, the rapper failed to gain many votes, garnering just 0.04% of the ballot nationally.

Another source said that Kanye has become irritated by Kim and her famous family’s luxurious lifestyle, labelling the Kardashians as “unbearable”.

They said: "He is completely over the entire family… he wants nothing to do with them."

In October, Kim flew out 40 of her close friends and family to an island near Tahiti during the pandemic for her extravagant 40th birthday party, causing major social media backlash.

However, it has been reported that Kanye only showed up to the party for one day before leaving soon after.

The source said: "He showed up late and left early, he wouldn’t appear in any of their Instagram shots. All he did was bring over the hologram of her father Robert Kardashian, then got out of there as fast as he could."

Kim is said to be trying to get the rapper to hand over their Calabasas mansion in the divorce settlement.

The source added: “Kim is trying to get Kanye to turn over the Calabasas house to her, because that’s where the kids are based and growing up. That is their home.

“She owns all the land and adjoining lots around the house but Kanye owns the actual house. They’ve both put a lot of money into renovating it.”

Speaking of the reported divorce talks, the source said this isn’t “the first time” the couple have been talking about splitting, but that this time “it is way more serious”.

Kim and Kanye have been married for six years.

After their extravagant wedding in Florence in 2014, the pair quickly became an A-list power couple.

However, through the 2020 lockdown, it was widely reported that the two were “living separate lives”.

There were rumours that Kim was living at the opposite end of their mansion to Kanye, followed by claims that Kanye had escaped to his ranch for a break.

A source told People magazine in December that “their lives don’t overlap much”.
