Residents in Leeds are stumped as to what a flying 'ball of flames' spotted over the skies of Leeds could be.

Marie Brown took the video over the ring road in Wortley.

She posted it onto Facebook, where people across Leeds questioned what it could be.

One said: "Is it ET?"

Another added: "It looks like a ball of flames, I have no idea where it could come from?"

The consensus of many Leeds residents was that the flying object was a Chinese lantern.

A Chinese lantern is a small hot air balloon made of paper with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is suspended.

Sky lanterns have been made illegal in several countries.
