Katrina Cliffe, 37, and her daughters Stevie, 15, and Jaime, nine, rushed out to enjoy a “once in a lifetime” experience skating on a lake in Greenhead Park in Huddersfield.

The trio have been training for three years but due to lockdown have been frozen out of the ice rink for months - and have been eagerly waiting to get their skates on.

On Saturday (Feb 13), a friend messaged Katrina to tell her a group of lads were playing a game of ice hockey at a park just five minutes from their home.

They quickly put on their thickest coats and fluffiest gloves, packed their ice skates and rushed to the park at around 4pm.

The weekend saw the nation plunge to record low temperatures with some parts of the country dipping into -23C.

The lake at the park froze over for what is believed to be the first time since 1889.

Katrina, from Huddersfield, said: “It was fabulous to put our skates back on.

“It was great to be able to go out and do something we love. It’s something that gives us great joy.

“I never expected to be able to skate on a frozen lake in England, we’ve seen it around the world and were always envious.

“It was a once in a lifetime experience for a person in England.

“It was a wow moment as I couldn’t believe we were doing this five minutes from our home in Huddersfield.

“It was just amazing and a truly unique experience to get out there.”

Katrina says her daughters have been desperate to get back on the ice during lockdown.

They started skating together three years ago as a hobby and a way to exercise, but have since become incredibly passionate about the sport.

The married mum-of-two said their time on the ice was the "best two hours" they've had since the start of the pandemic.

Katrina, who works in PR, said: “It was nice to be able to forget everything that was happening in the world.

“It’s something we’re so passionate about together. It’s exercise, but it’s also real quality family time with my daughters.”

She added: “It was the best two hours out there on the ice."
