Fire crews were called to the Horbury Road sports centre at 7.25pm on Wednesday.

The fire spread to an overhanging section of a roof of a building.

It caused heavy smoke logging to the building.

Three crews attended the scene from Wakefield, Ossett and Dewsbury.

Crews used 2 hose reels, 2 breathing apparatus and a High Powered fan to clear smoke from the building.

The stadium is used for training by some of the British gymnastics squad, including British tumbling champion Elliot Brown, and children were training when the fire broke out.

The stadium remains closed.

Officers investigating the blaze are now hoping to hear from anyone who witnessed the fire or saw anything suspicious in the area at the time of the fire.
