Everything you need to know ahead of Armed Forces Day 2019 in Leeds

Armed Forces Day celebrates the courage and contribution of the British Armed Forces community: from veterans to currently serving troops, reserves, cadets and service families.

And here in Leeds, we know how to show that support, including a day of free celebrations on Briggate on Saturday, June 29, from 11am to 4pm.

The event promises a huge array of attractions with something to suit all ages. These include family-friendly activities, including a climbing wall, arts, crafts; an array of displays, military equipment, armed forces-related stalls.

And there will be a full-sized replica Spitfire, as well as stalls with information about welfare, education and services for serving personnel, veterans and their families.

There will also be an opportunity to speak with people from a range of military charities and veterans groups, and to hear their inspiring stories.

The full programme of entertainment on the day is as follows:

11am - Parade

From Albion Street via Commercial Street and onto Briggate. Band music, flags, uniforms, badges and medals … and the salute at the dais, with civic dignitaries by the Spitfire - don’t miss it!

11.30am West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Band

After leading the parade, Yorkshire’s premier ‘Military Style’ marching and concert band will play a selection from their vast repertoire of traditional and popular music.

12 noon The Daisy Belles

This all-singing, all-dancing female trio will showcase a delightful mix of classic hits from the 40’s – put on your dancing shoes!

12.45pm City of Leeds Pipe Band

There are few who cannot be moved by the sight and sound of a pipe and drum band in full Highland military uniform and City of Leeds Pipe Band is one of the best.

1pm Rocky Road

Playing a selection of rock covers that will not disappoint, this local band is fronted by Armed Forces veteran, Naheed Tariq.

1.45pm City of Leeds Pipe Band

Gather round for their second performance of the day, and see why this band has been welcomed to play at both Windsor Castle and Balmoral Castle.

2pm The Daisy Belles

For their second performance of the day – be dazzled with their intricate harmonies, cute vintage choreography and fun-loving flair!

2.45pm Jessica May Frost

Leeds’ teen star with the big voice – Jessica will thrill you with her rendition of contemporary and popular numbers.

3.15pm Rocky Road

Maybe a little bit of pop, maybe rock or funk – find your place for a late afternoon boogie.

3:54pm Dakota flypast

Attune your ears to the engine-rumble of the World War 2 RAF Dakota and gaze skywards as it approaches Briggate for a spectacular three-times flypast to round up the day’s fun and celebrations.
