Like Bielsa we want Leeds to lead the way back into Europe - YEP letters

RESTORING Britain’s influence in Europe is not an “outdated cause”, Mrs J Green (Flying the flag is clinging to an outdated cause, YEP letters, September 18). It is a campaign just getting under way.

Which is why Leeds for Europe would like to see this Remain voting city show its true colours and fly the European flag on public buildings such as the town hall.

It already happens in Scotland and other non-European Union countries.

The EU shares a flag with the Council of Europe – of which the UK is still a member.

Damage needs repairing. Even today, we have a government trying – but thankfully failing – to serve its own narrow political ends by demonising allies and trashing our reputation abroad.

Where have I seen that before? Oh yes, Trump’s America.

It is four years since Theresa May said: “Brexit Means Brexit”. But seven months after leaving the EU and barely 100 days until transition ends, we do not know what Brexit truly means.

Deal or not, we will on January 1. The signs are not good.

Ministers who used to dismiss anything bad as ‘Project Fear’ now call potential border delays, food and fuel shortages, troops on the streets and Channel Islands air drops “reasonable worse case” planning.

Given its record on issues such as virus testing and the exams fiasco, how confident can we be it is preparing adequately to mitigate Brexit’s consequences?

Anyone who voted in 2016 but has sat on the fence since then can soon judge if Boris Johnson is delivering on his promised “oven-ready” deal (spoiler alert: he isn’t).
