Passer by felt "duty to help" after witnessing disorder on bus in Leeds

Jonathan Ruston was enjoying an evening in the city centre when saw a group of teenagers causing problems on a number 12 First Leeds service.

As previously reported in the YEP, three teenagers were arrested on suspicion of assault after a 33-year-old man was attacked in the street.

The disturbance, which began in the street, had spilled onto the bus by the time Mr Ruston passed by at around 10pm on February 8.

Jonathan Ruston, who intervened when he saw a disturbance on a Leeds bus.

"I'd been out for dinner and was walking back to my car," he said. "l saw the First Leeds bus parked up near the Corn Exchange with the driver on the phone and a lot of commotion inside.

"I'm actually a bus mechanic and work for Transdev Harrogate bus company. I've an interest and knowledge of buses so l felt l had a duty to help."

Mr Ruston, 36, boarded the bus and offered reassurance to the driver.

He also helped to keep the suspects on board until police arrived.

"They were so aggressive and angry but l stood my ground calmly," he said.
