Nearly 6,000 cars are being taken off city centre roads each week thanks to people using the sites at Elland Road and Temple Green, it has been announced.

The total number of cars left at the two sites over the course of the week commencing September 11 was 5,780.

And the figure for recently-opened Temple Green alone was 2,091 – a rise of more than 600 on the last week of the summer.

The two park-and-rides are joint enterprises between the West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), Leeds City Council and transport firm First.

WYCA transport chair Coun Keith Wakefield said: “Park-and-ride schemes are taking thousands of cars out of Leeds’s city centre every week.

“Not only is this reducing congestion and speeding up journey times for commuters but it is also improving air quality so the city is a nicer place to live and work. More commuters are making use of park-and-ride every week and I’d recommend anyone who usually drives into Leeds via these routes gives it a go.

“We’ve had great feedback from users already and we’d love to see even more people taking advantage of this travel option.”

As previously reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, a new 1,100-space park-and-ride is being planned for Stourton, next to junction seven of the M621.
