Panel show for art lovers in Leeds

A FASCINATING piece of art history is being exhibited in public for the first time since 1888 at Leeds's Henry Moore Institute.

Charity and Justice was produced by 19th century sculptor William Hamo Thornycroft as part of his work on a memorial to Major General Charles George Gordon, a British Army officer who died in battle in Sudan in 1885.

Comprising a bronze figure of Gordon with two bronze relief panels, the memorial now stands on London’s Victoria Embankment.

The piece that has gone on display in Leeds is a full-size plaster model of one of the panels that depicts the allegorical figures of Charity and Justice.

It will be on show with accompanying sketches and photographs in gallery four at the Henry Moore Institute until August 21.
