The team at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice were hoping to raise £2,000 as part of its recent Mother’s Day Appeal.

But the generosity of YEP readers has pushed that total to £13,000 to help families at the Headingley-based site enjoy precious moments with their families and friends.

The money will help to provide hundreds of complementary therapies for loved ones at the hospice.

The cash will also help to fund counselling sessions for those who have been affected by bereavement. 
 The hospice provides free care for people living with life-limiting conditions, such as cancer, but it costs £11,000 every day to keep the doors open.

Helen Ankrett, hospice director, at Sue Ryder Wheatfields Hospice, said: “We are incredibly grateful for all the support of the YEP and its readers for our Mother’s Day appeal.

“It helped to raise a staggering £13,000 for the hospice.

“This will help pay for 371 sessions of complementary therapy helping to alleviate symptoms such as anxiety, breathlessness, pain and feeling sick, or for 260 sessions of bereavement counselling for someone struggling to cope with the loss of a loved one.

“Our staff and volunteers provide incredible hospice care through a range of services so that people can have choice and control over how and where they receive their care.

“We couldn’t have raised so much for the appeal without the help of the local community and the YEP that has kindly helped support and promote our appeal.”
