A young woman from Otley who has taken part in the world-famous Clipper race has returned home triumphant after five months at sea.

Heather Thomas, 19, of Chevin Avenue, won her place in the race after being nominated by her instructor at Otley Sailing Club.

She was gifted a single stint joining a crew on the race around the world but, once on board, she couldn’t give up and she completed the journey with them sailing into London on Saturday.

“It’s been amazing and exhilarating, but pretty tough!” she said, admitting that she struggled at times with the cold and wet. “I can’t wait to sleep in a warm, comfy bed!”
