OSCAR nominated writer Tom Bidwell is set to host a free film night at the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds later this month

The 30-year-old, who survived cancer aged 15, will talk about his experiences fighting the disease before going on to write some the UK’s biggest dramas and an Oscar nominated short film called ‘Wish 143.’

Set in Leeds, ‘Wish 143’ is both humorous and touching, telling the story of a teenage boy dealing with terminal cancer, based partly on Mr Bidwell’s own experiences.

He wanted to highlight in the film how young people with the illness are teenagers first and cancer patients second.

Mr Bidwell said: “It was a cathartic experience to write the film and I wanted to show how a teenager with cancer has the same wants and needs as any other teenager, they just happen to have cancer too. The film shows the person behind the illness to encourage others to think about this too.”

The film night is being supported by charities Teenage Cancer Trust and Cancer Research UK. To book a place at the event, go to http://goo.gl/MFyxGM
