Last night thousands took to the streets in a show of support to thank the unsung army of key workers who have kept our city moving during the pandemic.

It was the final official clap for key workers after its founder Annemarie Plas called to end the tradition on a high after fears some aspects of the tradition had started to become “politicised”.

The remarkable expression truly demonstrated a new level of appreciation and awareness of NHS staff, carers and key workers.

It also helped to bring communities together – neighbours who have never communicated with one another came out of their homes for the same purpose.

And ultimately it was a strong show of solidarity to lift those who are on the frontline in the fight against coronavirus.

Many streets will no doubt choose to keep this tradition alive until the emergency has passed – and they too should be applauded.

At the heart of this is a city that truly cares about others when they need it the most.
