Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday pleaded with communities across the country to look out for one another as part of a full national effort during “the worst public health crisis for a generation”.

Safety is absolutely paramount at this time. Anyone with coronavirus symptoms, however mild, such as a continuous cough or high temperature, must now stay at home for seven days.

The spread of the virus and the measures to contain it are expected to cause “months of disruption”.

And those fearing the worst during this time are some of our city’s independent businesses who have already reported a drop in footfall this week.

But now really is the time for Leeds to show exactly how compassionate it can be to dig deep and support others across the city.
