We must not let abuse on social media pose a threat to open democracy - the YEP says

That is the warning today from the chief executive of Leeds City Council as he backs the Yorkshire Evening Post’s Call It Out campaign.

Tom Riordan fears that without a concerted effort to tackle this unacceptable behaviour, a whole generation will be put off playing an active role in civic life.

And there is a worry that as public figures withdraw then debates around important matters will move behind closed doors.

Freedom of speech is the corner stone of any democracy.

Our city and its residents must and should be free to challenge those decisions that impact all our lives.

After all it is through meaningful debate and discussion that change can come about as a real force for good.

Debate can also offer a real voice for those who wouldn’t necessarily be heard.

But there is a fine line between freedom of speech and freedom of hate.

And that is why each of us must join forces to play a role in calling it out.
