Today’s front page carries a stark warning to transport chiefs that the city’s station is at “breaking point” in terms of its capacity.

Despite lockdown and the drop in passengers in recent months transport chiefs are expecting a growth in commuter numbers and predict that by 2023 it will be busier than London Kings Cross.

The logistics of expanding the station are difficult because of its location - next to the River Aire and surrounded by historic buildings - so long-term support needs to be given to look at other solutions.

The key is looking at reducing overcrowding and the extension of platforms.

Work is already under way with Platform Zero but we need more action to support the busiest station in the North.

We simply cannot afford for our city not to stay on track.
