Who’s in the running for the post of Mayor? Saturday’s article in the to YEP gave a list of “politicians” who might be or would be willing candidates.

It appears your journalist in writing the article has only considered those with political attachments to whatever party they are aligned with. The problem with candidates with political alliance is they will have to deal with those opposed to their politics, not just their policies.

A Labour mayor would find themselves against a Tory government and a Tory mayor would find themselves against the local councils controlled by Labour. Not a very favourable start for any politically connected mayor.

I am no politician but I am a Yorkshireman, born and bred, and I know what West Yorkshire needs.

Have I the necessary skills to procure what is needed? I don’t know but would, as a true Tyke, give it my best.

Would the local councils help to achieve those needs? Who can tell as these days they generally make plans and decisions before announcing a consultation to see if the populace agree.

Even then if the majority are against they still convince themselves they are right and carry on.

Does the future mayor listen to them, the populace or make his/her own decisions as to what they themselves believe West Yorkshire needs? Personally I would prefer a Yorkshireman who believes in Yorkshire and its folk and would put them first.

First in improving their lives and prospects through projects, construction, transport, employment and schemes like rebuilding our engineering past, to renew those lost skills.

If such a result transpired the mayor would probably face political opposition from all sides but if his/her policies proved to be more beneficial than the norm of today then no doubt the populace would back them.

They would also be controversial to many but history has proved many such decisions to be bountiful. One can only hope West Yorkshire makes the right choice.
