THE news that British Airways is pulling out of Leeds Bradford Airport is a kick in the teeth for the people of Yorkshire and the North East.

My wife and I, and many friends, have used the LBA-Heathrow service many times over the past few years to connect with BA flights to Miami, Cape Town and other worldwide destinations. The flights to Heathrow were always full.

Now we have the choice of a 150-mile round trip to Manchester airport, usually at rush hour, or use KLM via Amsterdam.

Or we could take the train to Heathrow. This means Harrogate-Leeds or York, then to King’s Cross. Transfer to the Tube or to Paddington for the Heathrow express. All this with two suitcases and sets of golf clubs?

British Airways should come clean and rename themselves London Airways.

MANY of you will be aware of the planning application by Leeds Bradford Airport to invest £150m in constructing a new, efficient, and carbon neutral terminal by 2023, which will secure the long term future of the airport and the jobs it supports.

This will also greatly increase the GDP contribution to the city and wider region in the post-Covid 19 era, when the local economy will need to recover. A £150m investment in the airport and the region it serves is a significant step towards this.

This is not an application to increase passengers. The previously approved growth to 7m passengers per year by 2030 is unaffected and not changing.

The terminal will be funded entirely by the airport owners, not through public funds. Contrary to what certain anti-aviation groups claim, there is no change in flying hours either.

Editor’s note: first and foremost - and rarely have I written down these words with more sincerity - I hope this finds you well.
