YP Letters: Failing Leeds bus system in need of new regulations

I WRITE this letter on behalf of all the people who are reliant on public bus services throughout the Leeds and extended area (The Yorkshire Post, March 3).

For many years now, our city has been left behind in terms of public transport and infrastructure with millions wasted on failed schemes and projects which have either run out of money, have been badly managed or were simply too complicated for implementation.

For those of us who have to endure the daily commute in and around the city with long term roadworks and increased congestion across all major routes, the lack of acceptability and accountability from the council, our local MPs, the bus operators, Highways Agency and the Government is nothing short of diabolical.

Cycle schemes – and park and rides – have seen heavy investment which, in my mind, is a shoddy attempt to create a good news story to hide behind the short comings of the other failures.

With a rising population and more facilities being created in the hope to attract increased tourism, footfall and, ultimately improve, the local economy, connectivity throughout the city – along with contingency plans and buy-in from all parties – is a must-have necessity if this situation is to ever improve.

5G is already available in Leeds. If the technology is used correctly, the transport industry should be one of the main beneficiaries – I just hope this latest groundbreaking opportunity is realised and doesn’t fall by the wayside like so many of its previous flash-in-the-pan ideas have done to date.
