The latest Office for National Statistics estimates tell us that over the two week period to July 5, on average 14,000 people in England had COVID-19, equating to 0.03 per cent of the population - or around one in every 3,900 individuals.

Why then must the other 99.97 per cent of us be compelled to wear face masks on the miniscule chance that we might encounter one of the tiny number of people who are infected and also not in self-isolation.

And in any case, it is widely accepted that face masks do not offer protection to those who are not infected.
