Forget a ‘Museum of Brexit’ - Leeds should display the EU flag on its public buildings: Yorkshire Post Letters

BRITAIN will get a celebratory “Museum of Brexit”, according to right-wing press reports. Ironic, as many of us would like to consign Brexit and its consequences to history. Undoubtedly, lost jobs and lost opportunities will be among the exhibits.

Seemingly the “museum” plans were delayed by Covid-19. Ironic again as the virus was not judged catastrophic enough by the Government to extend our post-Brexit transition beyond December so it could focus on one crisis at a time.

No doubt the Union flag will feature prominently in the “museum” – without recognition of that irony. Nothing in recent history has done more than Brexit to undermine the integrity of the UK which the flag is meant to symbolise.

This “museum” will apparently be in a Leave voting area. Thankfully, that puts the Remain city of Leeds out of the running.

At Leeds for Europe, we would like our politicians to do something more positive. Follow their counterparts in Scotland and Liverpool by displaying the Europe flag on our public buildings. Liverpool does this because, like Leeds, it “is and will always be a major European city”. And that is something worth celebrating.
