Children are 'hidden victims' of lockdown with mental health - the YEP says

The upheaval has had an impact on everyone.

But today a children’s charity warns it will leave a lasting impact on the mental health of youngsters.

More than half of the weekly 4,000 calls from children and young people to Leeds-based charity Childline during the pandemic are related to mental health concerns.

It is concerned that during lockdown some vulnerable children may be suffering abuse at home which could have been discovered if they were going to school and mixing with friends.

There are fears young people are witnessing first-hand the impact of domestic violence in the home or drug-taking.

But the charity warns that even the simplest of changes can also have an impact on children’s wellbeing - including a lack of routine and not being able to leave the house.

Children are thought of as being resilient but they really are the hidden victims - and their young voices need to be heard.
